Colm is founding Managing Director and Chief Executive of Brick by Brick, a progressive development company established by Croydon Council which specialises in the development of smaller sites. The company includes the successful ‘Common Ground Architecture’ practice, and has gained significant industry recognition for using good design as a means of unlocking development capacity. It is structured in a way which aims to maximise the return to local communities from all aspects of the development process. Colm has led some of London’s largest and most complex development projects for over 15 years, including senior level roles at the Homes and Communities Agency, Greater London Authority and London growth boroughs such as Newham, Croydon and Lambeth. He holds masters degrees in Economics and Urban Design and is a regular expert contributor to industry publications.
At Congress, Colm will be discussing how a new breed of forward-thinking public authorities are maximising the social benefit of development activity by taking a more active role. In the case of his company Brick by Brick, this involves deliberately extracting value from each element of the development process and re-investing it in the local community.
